Selling gold & jewellery

A jeweller looks at the whole piece.

We buy fine jewellery, old gold, platinum and silver, and we consider each item as jewellery before we think about its weight.

Gold buyers who work by post or over a counter usually price by the gram: the hallmark or carat, the weight and the day’s gold price. That is a fair starting point for broken chains, odd earrings and scrap. It is not the whole story for a well-made ring, a signed piece or an older design that someone else would be glad to wear.

Bring your pieces to our Caversham shop so we can look at them in person. We consider the metal, any stones, the condition and the design, and explain how an offer would be assessed. If you have several items, keep any receipts, certificates or paperwork with the relevant piece. You do not need to identify everything yourself before getting in touch.

A description or photograph can help start the conversation, but a purchase offer needs an examination of the items, so we do not quote a value from the enquiry form. For a piece with personal significance, we can also discuss repairs or remodelling before you decide to sell.

Gold jewellery

Rings, chains, bracelets, earrings and pendants in 9ct, 18ct and 22ct gold, whether worn every day or sitting in a drawer. Broken or incomplete pieces are worth bringing too.

Fine & inherited jewellery

Diamond and gemstone pieces, signed jewellery and older designs can be worth more than their metal. Bring any history you know, however little.

Platinum & silver

We also buy platinum and silver. For sterling and hallmarked silver, see our separate guide to selling silver, or ask the shop before making a special journey.

Your questions

Before you decide.

How is gold valued when I sell it?
Gold is usually assessed from its fineness (the hallmark or carat), its weight and the current gold price. A jeweller also considers whether a piece has value beyond its metal, for example a good stone, fine workmanship or a design that could be sold on as jewellery. We explain how an offer has been reached when you bring the item in.
Will I get more from a jeweller than from a postal gold buyer or pawnbroker?
Not always, but you will get a view of the piece as jewellery rather than only as scrap. Postal and high-street gold buyers generally price by weight. If your item is simply broken gold, the difference may be small. If it is a well-made or saleable piece, it can matter. Bring it in and compare.
Can I sell inherited jewellery?
You can speak to us about inherited pieces you are considering selling. Bring the jewellery and any information you have. If you are unsure whether to part with it, you can also ask about repair, remodelling or a valuation before deciding.
Can you give me a price online?
We need to see the items before confirming a purchase offer. Use the enquiry form to describe what you have and ask what to bring. An old receipt or valuation is useful background, but it is not an offer from Nash & Co.
Do you buy broken gold jewellery?
We buy old gold. Tell us what the item is and whether it is broken or incomplete when you call, so we can discuss it before you travel. Acceptance and any offer depend on assessment.
Do you buy gold coins and sovereigns?
Ask the shop before you travel. Tell us what the coins are and how many you have, and we will let you know whether we can help or suggest what to do next.
How will I be paid, and what identification should I bring?
Please ask the shop to confirm identification requirements, any assessment charges and the available payment method and timing before your visit. These arrangements are discussed directly with the shop.
I am travelling from elsewhere in Berkshire or Oxfordshire. Should I call first?
Yes. Describe the items you would like to sell, confirm the opening hours and ask what paperwork to bring. The shop is at 14 Bridge Street, Caversham, Reading RG4 8AA, a short walk over Caversham Bridge from the town centre.
