Pearl & bead
restringing.

A favourite necklace can spend years in its box because the thread or clasp no longer feels secure. Bring your pearls or beads to our Caversham shop and discuss getting them ready to wear again.

A useful first step

Bring the whole piece.

  1. The necklace or bracelet
  2. Any loose pearls or beads
  3. The clasp and remaining thread

Even a broken strand gives us something to start with.

Pearl & bead restringing

Look at the whole necklace, not just the thread.

Restringing is a chance to discuss the way your piece sits, fastens and feels.

Pearl and bead necklaces can need attention as their thread wears or stretches. Loose knots, a broken strand or concerns about a clasp are reasons to bring the piece in and talk through the work needed.

If a strand has already broken, keep the pearls or beads together with the clasp and any remaining parts. Their arrangement and the way the piece was originally finished can help with the conversation about restringing.

Tell us if you want to retain the original length and arrangement, or would like to discuss a change. Thread, knotting and fastening choices depend on the individual piece. We can discuss the proposed work, cost and timing after seeing it.

Pearl necklaces

Discuss worn thread, stretched sections or loose knots before a favourite strand is worn again.

Bead jewellery

Bring the piece and any loose beads, including those you are unsure how to place back in the design.

Clasps & length

Explain any trouble with the fastening or how the necklace sits, so this can be considered alongside the thread.

Your questions

Before you decide.

How do I know whether my pearls need restringing?
Thread that looks worn or stretched, noticeably loose knots, or a broken strand are reasons to have the piece looked at. If you are unsure whether it is secure, bring it to the shop before continuing to wear it.
Do you restring beads as well as pearls?
Yes, pearl and bead restringing is one of our jewellery services. Bring the piece so we can discuss its construction, fastening and the work needed.
Can the original clasp be kept?
Tell us if you would like to keep it. Its condition and compatibility with the proposed restringing need to be considered, so bring the clasp along with the rest of the piece.
Can you change the length of a necklace?
We can discuss the length you would prefer. What is possible depends on the strand, the available pearls or beads and how it is finished. Bring a photograph of how you like it to sit if that helps explain your idea.
How much will it cost and how long will it take?
The length, number and type of pearls or beads, knotting and clasp work affect the job. Speak to the shop about the cost and current timing after the piece has been seen.
