Antique, vintage & second-hand jewellery

Older pieces.
New stories.

Jewellery with a past has a character that new pieces rarely match. Come and see what has arrived at our Caversham shop, a short walk over the bridge from Reading town centre.

Why older jewellery

Made to be noticed.
Made to last.

Hand-finished settings, unusual stones and designs you will not see on everyone else.

Much of the second-hand and antique jewellery that comes through the shop was made by hand, at a time when a ring or a brooch was expected to be worn for a lifetime and passed on. The detail rewards a closer look: the cut of an old stone, the texture of a setting, an engraving that has softened with wear.

Pre-owned pieces can also offer more for the money than a new equivalent, and choosing one means the gold and stones are enjoyed again rather than mined again. Each piece is chosen for the shop and looked over before it goes out, and we tell you what we know about it.

Rings

Victorian, Edwardian, Art Deco and mid-century rings, pre-owned diamond and gemstone rings, signet rings and dress rings. The styles change with what arrives.

Brooches, lockets & pendants

Bar brooches, lockets, cameos, crosses and pendants in gold and silver. Small pieces with a great deal of character, often at modest prices.

Bracelets, bangles & chains

Gate bracelets, hinged bangles, older chains and charm bracelets. Weight, fit and fastening are best judged on the wrist, so come and try them.

How it works

Stock changes.
Come and look often.

01

Pieces keep arriving.

Older jewellery comes to us as people sell pieces to the shop, so what is in the window keeps changing. If you like something, it may not be there next month.

02

Each piece is looked over.

Every piece is looked at before it goes out, and we tell you what we know about its age, metal and condition. Ask us anything about a piece that catches your eye.

03

Tell us what you are after.

Looking for a particular style, stone or period? Let us know and we will tell you if something suitable comes in. A quick call is the best way to start.

Antique and second-hand jewellery sits beside handmade pieces in the shop. If you cannot find the piece you are picturing, we can talk about having it made, or about giving an inherited piece a new setting.

Your questions

Before you visit.

What is the difference between antique, vintage and second-hand jewellery?
Antique usually means a piece that is at least a hundred years old. Vintage is generally used for pieces between about twenty and a hundred years old. Second-hand, or pre-owned, simply means the piece has had a previous owner, whatever its age. All three pass through the shop.
Do you sell second-hand engagement rings?
Pre-owned and antique rings, including diamond and coloured-stone rings, come through the shop regularly. Stock changes, so call before travelling for a particular style.
Is antique jewellery hallmarked?
Not always. Older pieces may be unmarked, or carry marks that have worn with age. We look at each piece before it goes into the window and tell you what we know about its metal, stones and age.
Can an antique ring be resized?
Often, but not always. Older bands, engraved shanks and stone-set designs need particular care. Ask about resizing when you try a ring on, and see our ring resizing page for what is involved.
Can I sell or part-exchange my old jewellery?
We buy gold, silver, platinum and fine jewellery. See selling gold and jewellery, bring what you have and ask the shop what applies when you visit.
Do you sell online or post jewellery?
No. The jewellery is sold in the shop so you can see it, try it and ask about it. Call 0118 947 2295 to check availability before you travel.
